Camp Canaan

Canaan Print Campaign

posted as Work by David on 09.21.08

A visionary group of people is starting something big down in Rock Hill, South Carolina. It's a camp and retreat outfit called Canaan. This poster is one piece of a campaign to raise awareness about the fall program. The founders and directors are close friends of ours, and I love doing work for them because I believe so much in them and what they are starting up. Canaan has all the right stuff to become the biggest camp and adventure program in the southeastern United States. Check them out here.

Fresh Fire Logo Design

Fresh Fire is a diverse group of college-age guys and gals that has just started to meet in Charlotte's University Area. They needed a logo that fit their brand of inclusive hipness. Their new mark symbolizes how people of different background can come together to create new and unifying sparks. Kudos to Fresh Fire and their vision.

Rock Show : October 09.2008

I took this photo on the same day we did the Flagship Brigade shoot. I'm a sucker for city shots. Always have been. Dave and I recently took the train to a Panther's game with our best girls and sat in the upper deck, a great place to check out Charlotte's burgeoning skyline. The Panthers beat the Bears in a heart-stopping 2nd-half comeback, which was pretty amazing. It was a great time.

Speaking of great times, if you live in Charlotte, you should definitely come out to the Rock Show at Tremont Music Hall. I mean, Public Radio, John Mark McMillan, Flagship Brigade...it's pretty stacked. And it won't be nearly as expensive as a Panther's game.

Here's another CD design I've been working on that just got printed. Good friend and Carolina native, Josh Baldwin, released his Changing album this week. Obviously I'm still camping out in the minimalist forest still, i let the images tell the story and kept the design interference to a minimum. this one was mostly layout and photo treatments. i really liked the way this turned out, though the first printing came out really dark. i'm hoping on subsequent printings that the subtlety of the photography comes out without having to mess with any of the levels. ah well. it's always something.

John Mark McMillan's CD release show at the Visulite Theatre here in Charlotte was last Saturday nite (the night after our well-attended art show, nine.five.oheight). The band played to a packed house with the sound system set on stun and the air conditioning set on 95. It was a great nite with great music. As promised, here's the whole CD packaging design I did for John Mark. We did t-shirts too, and hopefully I can post those in the next week or so.

John Mark McMillan: Upcoming Release

posted as Work by eric on 08.13.08

just finished with a rather large album release campaign for my good friend, john mark mcmillan. collaborating with photographer andy mcmillan, i designed the album artwork and subsequent marketing campaign, including his website, myspace, posters and cd release flyers. here is a pre-release postcard that went out to john mark's mailing list. it's a bad photo, i realize. what're you gonna do? i'll post more stuff later, i promise.

i was really happy with the way the packaging and overall design turned out. after doing the cover art on john mark's last cd (a very whimsical-styled painting that worked for a sophomore release) i wanted to go somewhere very minimal and serious, a look worthy of an artist who was coming into his own, having matured through 2 fairly indie-style releases. the album is a heavy album...not necessarily dark...just heavy. weighty, i guess. anyway, i felt that what we ended up with was a perfect representation of the music inside while maintaining some sense of distance and mystery. and it didn't hurt that andy took some great photos for me to work with...

Flagship Brigade

dave and i went out and did a photo shoot today for local charlotte band flagship brigade. we traipsed across the breadth of mecklenburg county, through southern jungles, concrete and otherwise. david stanfield took the one of lead singer drake margolnik up there at the top. i personally love the composition...the lines, the contrast. i, eric hurtgen took the one on the bottom of the boys in a miry swamp of a pond near the county line.

this is one of the pieces i did for last year's artshow, ten.five.ohseven. this year's show promises to be bigger and better, and we're really excited about it. if you missed it last time around, or if you just want to remember what it was like, check out some ten.five.ohseven photos here.

Summer Youth Camp

posted as Work by eric on 07.05.08

remember summer youth camp? nothing like middle school hijinks far away in the comfort of the middle of nowhere with zany twenty-something counselors and substandard bathroom facilities. here's a design i did for a cooler, more interesting youth summer camp. i did shirts as well, but i haven't seen them yet.
