Sister Corita

Sister Corita

posted as Influence by eric on 01.13.09

I'm a little late on this, unfortunately, but Aaron Rose of Beautiful Losers fame curated a handful of shows last year that featured the famed designer Sister Corita. They were killer shows and this youtube short gives rose's perspective on the show and some german guy talking. it's very cool.

"Corita Kent was an artist, teacher, philosopher, political activist, and possibly one of the most innovative and unusual pop artists of the 1960’s. However, what is perhaps even more incredible is that she was a catholic nun." She's definitely got some great work out there and it's worth digging through google to find her images. You can also check her out in the book Come Alive! The Spirited Art of Sister Corita.

Public Radio : Sweetchild

posted as Work by eric on 01.03.09

public radio is one of my favorite local bands that i hope isn't local for much longer, if you know what i mean. actually i feel that way about the charlotte scene in general. so many great artists+musicians here...

this ep was recorded in germany, produced by cannon hill founder, nicholas balachandran. the whole feel is very southern rock meets european sensibilities so i tried to continue that vibe with the packaging. if you have a chance to hear these guys live, by the way, you should do so.

Zao Water Project

posted as Work by eric on 01.03.09

zao water is thankfully one of the many companies who have, of late, been making a difference in the drinking water crisis in africa. two-thirds of the world have no access to clean drinking water. as a result, water-related diseases kill over 2 million people every year. children are the hardest hit apparently; every 15 seconds a child dies from a water-related disease.

zao bottles water from artesian springs in the north carolina mountains and uses the proceeds to fund clean-water well development in africa (currently they are focusing on kenya and tanzania). recently a group of local musicians got together to record an album whose proceeds goes to drill wells for zao. this cd was the result. probably one of my favorite design projects of 2008.

The Embers

posted as Work by eric on 11.23.08

the embers are a group from kentucky who do alt-country/rock, so i wanted to give them a design that balanced the feel of country and a something a bit more modern. so i set it up on a grid and gave it the swiss treatment. in the end, i really like how it turned out... one of my favorite parts of this project was doing the photography. i shot these pictures of farmland in central kentucky with a borrowed d-80 in the middle of the humid summer, the locusts screaming in my ears.
